Congratulations Mairead

Local woman Mairead O’Mahony, a bone marrow transplant recipient, received a hero’s welcome when she returned home from the World Transplant Games in Perth with an amazing five medals, including two golds.
Mairead from Berrings helped the 14-strong Irish team end the games with an impressive haul of 17 medals, receiving silver in the 5km race, gold in shot put with a personal best, gold in the 800m race, silver in javelin, and bronze in the 1500m.
Crediting her donor brother for making it all possible Mairead thanked her brother Willie for being her donor when she was 18 years old and ‘literally saving her life.’
This is Mairead’s first time representing Ireland in Transplant Sport and she has now earned the reputation as ‘the one to beat’ in world transplant athletics saying on her return, “I don’t think it has sunk in yet. It’s more than I ever could have imaged. It has been a fantastic experience with a fantastic team.”
