Local Killeens man Shane O’Sullivan and his family recently undertook ‘Beara2Breifne’ a 500km walk, and walked nearly a marathon a day every day for two weeks! Shane and two of his children, Lyra and Kyle, who live in Killeens, are amongst a family group who took on this walk to raise money for Marymount University Hospital and Hospice, West Cork Community Palliative Care and Pancreatic Cancer Research Fund. The journey is following in the footsteps of Donal Cam O’Sullivan Beare’s epic march across Ireland in 1602 and trekked through eight counties from June 26th until 10th July. The family took on this challenge in memory of their late father, John Finbarr O’Sullivan, who was a well regarded local historian from the Beara Peninsula and was so lovingly cared for by the community palliative care team and Marymount Hospice in his final stage of life. Their initial target was to raise €2,500 which is the cost of one weeks care for a patient and they have happily exceeded this amount several times over! Donations are still being gratefully accepted at https://www.idonate.ie/fundraiser/11395840_beara2breifne21.html and you can take a look at the family’s journey on their Instagram page: beara2breifne21
