Five year old Priya saves mum’s life!

Five year old Priya is a real local hero as this plucky little girl saved her mum’s life by calling her dad on facetime and telling him ‘mammy is on the floor’ after she suffered a stroke.

Priya, who lives in Tower with her mum Mary, dad Damien and baby brother Noah was at home on December 23rd when her mum collapsed. The quick thinking youngster kept her cool and called her dad on facetime telling him ‘Mammy is on the floor and she can’t get up.’

Dad Damien, who taught five year old Priya how to use facetime on her iPad a few months before so she could call her cousins, grandparents and other family members, was on his way to work when he received the call.

Speaking to Neil Prendeville on Cork’s Red FM Damien said that he does not usually answer his phone while driving but for some strange reason he decided to pick it up this time. “I saw her name on the phone and just decided to pick up which I don’t usually do but I just had a feeling for some strange reason that I needed to answer the call.” “She was crying and said that mammy was drinking her tea and now she was on the floor and can’t get up. I asked her what she meant and she just kept saying that mammy was on the floor and couldn’t get up.” “She turned the camera around so I could see her and that was when I could see that Mary was on the floor in the kitchen and she looked very distressed”. Damien made contact with Mary’s sister and her parents who live locally and who were able to get to the house within minutes and call an ambulance Damien continued, “They tried to get in through the back door but it’s a new house so they couldn’t get through the double sliding doors and on the inside there is a latch. Her dad was ready to break down the door but then Priya was able to open the latch and let them in.”

The ambulance arrived and took Mary to CUH but it was the incredible bravery of little Priya that doctors have since credited with saving Mary’s life.

“An ambulance came within about 40 minutes and Mary was seen within seconds when she got there and she had a scan and that is when we found out that she had a stroke. A clot had travelled to the left side of her brain and that side had completely shut down,” Damien said. “It happened on the Monday and on the Tuesday I met Mary’s surgeon when I was on my way up to her and I thanked him for what he had done and he said there is no need to thank me for a job that I do every day, you have a little five year old girl who is the real hero.” “The surgeon told us that with a stroke time is precious and that without Priya, Mary wouldn’t be here today. She doesn’t even know it yet but she is an absolute hero.”

Damien said that he will never stop Priya from playing on her iPad ever again and that she can spend as much time on her device as she wants. “I know we all give out to our kids about being on their tablets and all this kinda stuff but when it comes to this she saved her mother’s life so she can use it as much as she likes!”

Mary is now home and we wish the family all the very best after their ordeal.
