The June 2014 Blarney Person of The Month is Donal Hayes.
“I would like to propose Donal Hayes for Blarney Person of the Month. Donal has been involved with the Blarney Men’s Shed Project since its inception two years ago, and anyone who has seen how the group has developed from a small number to a vibrant team, cannot fail to be impressed by the transformation. Under Donal’s guidance, they have carried out many projects including decorating the Mill Youth Cafe, insulating and repairing a rundown section of the community centre, and building from scratch a farm dray (which went on to win first prize in the St Patrick’s Day Parade in Blarney.) In theory Donal operates on one half day per day (Wednesday), but in reality this work takes up many more hours in the week. Donal also deals on a voluntary basis with the Cork Educational Training Board, and other statutory bodies to further the interests of Blarney Men’s Shed. He recently organised furniture restoration, carpentry and ceramic courses, and the group have also made and painted flower boxes which are now in situ around Blarney. As well as his work with this group, Donal is a devotee of matters ecological, and is the driving force behind a movement to promote composting in Blarney. For his hard and unselfish work, I am proposing Donal.”
