Junior Match Report Ballincollig 4-12, Macroom 2-13 Our Junior Ladies had an impressive win over Macroom recently as they continued their League Campaign. With a number of our players unavailable on the day due to Leaving Cert and other commitments, a call was put out to some of our experienced younger players to step up, which they willingly did. We knew that we were up for a tough match, with Macroom always strong opponents. True to prediction, Macroom came out strong with 2 fast points and a strong attempt at goal, which was superbly saved by our Goalkeeper, Erin Taylor.Orla Ní Cathsaigh opened the Ballincollig scoreboard, followed shortly by a spectacular goal by Orla NicCárthaigh as the Ballincollig team started to settle into the game. Trojan work was done by our backs Amy, Kate, Caitlin, Sinead, Ava and Grace as Macroom came at us strongly again and again. Our Goalkeeper fought several goal attempts in superb fashion as Macroom slowly pulled ahead scoring 2 goals. In the last 10 minutes of the first half, the Ballincollig girls seemed to step their work rate up a notch with another goal and a point scored by Trish. At the half-time whistle there was only a difference of 2 points in the score line and Ballincollig had the belief that they could go on to win the game. The Ballincollig forwards were more composed in the second half, opening the score line quickly. It was a very tight match with the ball travelling up and down the pitch as both teams continued to add up points. As legs got tired, a few changes were made as the younger players brought a new energy to the game. Orla Nic Cárthaigh scored 2 goals in quick succession, helped by the superb work of Ciara Healy now in Mid Field and Orla Ní Cathsaigh fielding and distributing of the ball. Alexandria and Caitlin scored 2 very impressive points, showing us what the younger team members had to offer! Ballincollig continued to add to their score line and Macroom continued to add to their points – unable in the second half to get past Erin who had a truly outstanding performance. The last point for the Ballincollig team was scored by Sorcha NicCarthaigh as the Ballincollig ladies celebrated a well-deserved win. This team have shown great spirit throughout their League campaign and the future is looking extremely bright with so much talent and eagerness from the younger players. Well done Ladies! Match Report – Under 16 Ballincollig 2-11, Passage 1-8 Our Under 16s had a superb win over Passage moving to third position in the Mid Cork League Table. The girls knew that a win was essential against Passage if we wanted to have a good chance of reaching a Semi Final and were determined to succeed on the night. Passage are always strong opponents and came at us consistently in the first half, adding points steadily to their score line. Our backs Caitlin, Abbie, Michaela, Meabh, Emma and Ciara were superb fighting off attack after attack with some fantastic saves from our Goalie Niamh to keep us in the game. The Ballincollig mid-field and forwards found it difficult to get the ball over the goal line and it was 20 minutes before we put ourselves on the scoreboard with a beautiful point by Sorcha. It was onwards and upwards from there as Ballincollig settled into the game. Passage failed to score any more points in the first half, while 2 powerful goals from Abi Ring well and truly put Ballincollig back in the game. With another point by Aoife Murphy, Ballincollig had a 3-point lead at the half time whistle. The self-belief was high heading into the second half of the game– knowing that each girl had to dig deep to keep the lead in the game. Miriam had an outstanding second half performance as she drove forward, fielding some great ball and making great scoring opportunities. The girls looked comfortable and displayed great teamwork as Ballincollig steadily added to their score line. Our backs continued to defend consistently as Alexandria worked hard to win ball and move it forward. It was 15 minutes into the second half before Passage scored a point – only scoring 3 points in the second half. With Aoife, Sorcha and Molly steadily adding points Ballincollig continued to increase the gap. Lauren set up some great points and Dearbhla made some great passes as the pace of the game increased. The determination of the team and the great teamwork payed off at the long whistle with Ballincollig finishing the game with a 6-point lead. With this team now in 3rd place on the League Board, we look forward to our final league match v Ballinora over the weekend and hopefully a place in a Mid Cork Semi Final. Well done to all involved.
