This year’s Cork Craft Month officially kicks off today, Thursday 2nd August, with the opening of the ‘Turn to the Ordinary’ exhibition at No. 46 Grand Parade, but there is nothing ‘ordinary’ about the talent that will be on show throughout the month of August. Now in its ninth year, Cork Craft Month showcases the works and practices of the many gifted artists, makers and designers living in Cork city and county, bringing their creations to the masses through a plethora of exhibitions, workshops, demos and ‘meet the maker’ events. This year, the opening night provides a fitting launch platform for the month-long series of events, as it offers an introduction to some of the leading makers that form the Cork Craft & Design (CCD) collective. While this exhibition is a key event in the jam-packed Cork Craft Month 2018 calendar, it is just one in a series of events that intend to inspire and enthral. There are also a wide range of workshops and demos taking place throughout the month, allowing budding artists to put their skills to the test, while the ‘Meet the Maker’ events give collectors and art appreciators the chance to see the artist at work and to witness their techniques and methods first-hand. There will also be a number of Open Studios in action all across the county during Cork Craft Month, where visitors can browse the vast repertoire of their favourite makers in their natural setting. Young makers and doers can also get involved, with a range of creative summer camps on offer throughout August. The complete Cork Craft Month 2018 brochure is available to view online at www.corkcraftanddesign.irish and the month incorporates the Inaugural Cork Craft Show which will take place at The International Hotel, Cork Airport Business Park on Saturday 1st and Sunday 2nd September from 11am to 5.30pm each day. This weekend will showcase the best in Irish craft including woodturning, ceramics, pottery, art, furniture design, metal, glass and textiles. There will be an exhibition area, an exhibitor selling area and a variety of different workshops for people to participate in throughout both days.
