Coláiste Choilm Ballincollig are the Paddy Drummond Cup champions after winning the Masita All-Ireland Post Primary Schools Senior B football final in Croke Park.
The Cork school failed to score in the final ten minutes but super-sub Declan Hyland’s goal within seconds of his introduction proved to be enough for John O’Shea’s men. St. Aidan’s had started the game the better of the two sides when Conor Kavanagh found the net inside two minutes. However, Ballincollig were level after 12 minutes thanks to points from Sean O’Donoghue (2) and Aaron O’Raw. The Dublin school continued to create the better chances without ever pulling away and the two sides exchanged points right up to the half-hour mark when it looked like they would go in level. St. Aidan’s though finished the half the stronger and points from Aaron Elliott and Gavin King saw them take a two-point lead into half-time; 1-4 to 0-5. Ballincollig levelled things up within two minutes of the restart thanks to two close-range O’Donoghue frees but they couldn’t get their noses in front and three unanswered points in a five-minute spell from St. Aiden’s put them in control. Once again though, the Cork school answered with three points of their own before an inspired substitution changed the game; Declan Hyland finding the back of the net within 30 seconds of his introduction to make it 1-11 to 1-8 after 49 minutes to give Ballincollig their first lead of the game. This time it was St. Aidan’s turn to fight back but two missed frees from Kavanagh didn’t help their cause. However, the half-forward made amends with two points in the space of a minute to bring his team back within a score with three minutes to play. However, despite a disallowed goal, they failed to trouble the scoreboard operators again.
