Past Pupil, Stephen O’Brien, was the special guest speaker at the Scoil Mhuire gan Smal, Blarney Awards Night. Stephen was diagnosed with Cystic Fibrosis at birth and though the treatments were all consuming he didn’t let CF define him. He continued with his education and attended College in Waterford and, after a number of disappointments, eventually got a double lung transplant in 2012. Post transplant he has completed the Ring of Kerry cycle race twice and won bronze medals in cycling and badminton at the European Transplant Games. He married the love of his life, Kate, in September this year and while he attributes his life to the efforts of his parents and siblings a lot of the credit must go to his own fighting spirit. “I’m so grateful to get this second chance thanks to the donor and the medical teams” he said.
