Sporting Wall of Fame launched in Ballincollig

Rob Heffernan and Sanita Puspure joined the trainees from YMCA’s STEP training Programme in Ballincollig recently to celebrate the launch of the Sporting Wall of Fame. This 40 metre mural has been an ongoing project since February 2017 when the 10 students embarked on this ambitious mural. The students were involved in selecting the sporting icons from around Cork and then, through all weathers, drew and painted them onto the wall. The wall itself is in a prominent position along the soccer pitch as you enter Innishmore Park and is a real eye catcher, providing a positive, inspirational backdrop to this important community space. STEP Coordinator Sharon O’Connell said, “This has really engaged our students in a creative and community focussed way, using team work skills, communication and they have created a really impressive piece of art that will live long in this community.” Featured on the mural are athletes Rob Heffernan, Sonia O’Sullivan, footballer Roy Keane, rowers Sanita Puspure, the O’Donovan brothers, boxers Jack McAuliffe, Katie Taylor, Mick Leahy, hurler Christy Ring, Willie ‘Long Puck’ Murphy, Thai Boxer Aaron McGahey, Gaelic Footballer Juliet Murphy and Bowler Mick Barry. The wall project and launch was supported by O’Crualaoi’s, MD O’Shea, The Paint Store, Tesco Community Fund and Ballincollig Tidy Towns
