Can you imagine sitting in your allotment in the sunshine with friends, in the middle of summer eating potatoes you have just dug and freshly picked strawberries and raspberries? To have an allotment at the Hydro Farm Allotments is like having your own little farm, a place to go when you need to think, to chill in a peaceful oasis. A place to eat great food you have grown yourself and feel healthier. But it is also a place where you make friends and meet families, you can learn and share what you grow, seeds, plants and harvests. It must be one of the best hobbies in the world, where you can get fit, feel healthy, grow wonderful fruit, flowers, vegetables and herbs, along with like minded people. The Hydro Farm Allotments started in 2000 and this is their 18th season. There are many seasoned gardeners who come back year after year, people from all walks of life, some with their small children, grandparents/retired, young couples and individuals. gardeners from Germany, Wales, Ireland, Russia, Spain, Latvia, Morocco and Iran. All are willing to share their ways of growing good food, so there is easy access to international ways of growing and varieties of seeds and plants, for the more adventurous growers. The Hydro Farm Allotments are the RDS Gold Medal Winners for the ‘Best Allotment Providers’ in Ireland. There is deep, rich, dark, chemical free soil that grows everything very well. This is supported by deep well water at every 4/5 plots. A tool shed, courtyard with pizza oven and barbecue, tea room, toilets, parking and ‘The Brambles Barn’ for gardening courses, social gatherings and meetings. The Hydro Farm Allotments is a place of quietness, tranquility, enjoyment, sharing and learning. There are large, medium and small plots, some already with poly tunnels/sheds. If you are a beginner or an experienced gardener, there is help for you to get the best plot for your growing needs. The sooner you come the better the choice, poly tunnels and sheds are welcome. There is a children’s orchard, with apple and pear trees; a fruit cage for soft fruit, red, black and white currants, raspberries, loganberries, Japanese wine berries, blueberries and wooster berries; and apple, damson, fig, almond, green gauge, medler and plum trees. Fruit from the Hydro Farm trees are shared among the gardeners, in season. Very excitingly, this year the Hydro Farm Allotments have created some extra plots for new gardeners.
