Spring has sprung for the Blarney Walking Group!

Spring has sprung for the Blarney Walking Group and they are off on the hills, highways and byways again. A programme of walks continued over the winter months, despite the weather and the sodden conditions underfoot. However, it is encouraging to look forward to the brighter and better days ahead. A number of new members have joined recently and there is a Cead Mile Failte for them and for anyone else who would like to join. Just contact a committee member (details below) or any club member and away you go. As the slogan says ‘Let`s Get Ireland Walking’, so no excuse, the club is there, weekly walks are scheduled, leaders are provided and all walk levels are catered for. Check out our web site www.blarneywalkinggroup.ie or call Eileen 087 4125617, Jim 086 8212331 or Bob 086 1218925. The website is now in a more user friendly format thanks to the expertise of club member John Murphy. Isaacs was the venue for the club Christmas party, a thoroughly enjoyable event, organised by Rhona Galvin. Members attended both the Aherlow and Dingle walking festivals. The latter proved a great week end away of walking, in the magnificent scenery of the Dingle Peninsula. The musical attributes of many of the members who attended, were also well enjoyed by all. It is hoped that attendance at these walking festivals will be a feature of the club`s yearly calendar. Plans are already afoot for the Ballyvaughan Walking Festival in September ! John Mc Laughlin led a group, around St. Patrick`s Day, to scale the heights of Ben Nevis. This was John`s second time to lead such a group and he is to be commended for the work and effort involved in such an undertaking. They had a wonderfully successful climb of the Ben in what John described as ‘fantastic weather.’ Congratulations to all who took part in the expedition and returned safely to tell the tale. The club’s next informal get together will take place in The Castle Hotel, on Wednesday, April 13th at 8.30pm and all are welcome, including perspective members. Hopefully, some of the Ben Nevis group will be there on the night, to recount their adventures. A further informal meeting will be held in June / July. As well as the weekly (Sunday) walks, the club also plans to incorporate local, evening walks, during the summer months and to give the option of some Saturday walks. These walk options will be posted on the web and texted to members. Happy walking to all.
