What is a Men’s Shed?
A Men’s Shed is a community space where men of all ages can get involved in a project, share skills or have a cuppa and a chat.
Retired men not only find they are at a loose end but they may have downsize their homes. They find they no longer have space for the workshop where they once undertook many tasks using their life time of accumulated skills.
Unemployed men also find themselves at a loose end but may want to use the shed to upskill themselves for future employment. The Shed is an environment where skills can be shared or passed on to younger members. In Blarney Men’s Shed the Cork Education and Training Board (ETB) are supporting this upskilling by providing tutors to run various courses.
For all men The Shed can be a place of refuge where men can talk and work together which helps prevent social isolation and is good for your mental wellbeing.
There are Men’s Shed’s all over Ireland and indeed all over the world. Blarney Men’s shed have twinned with The Men’s Shed (North Shore) Auckland New Zealand where at least one of our members will visit this year.
It has been said that Sheds are to a man what a handbag is to a woman!
It also has been said that men don’t talk face to face they talk shoulder to shoulder!
