Spring in the steps of Scoil Chroí Íosa, Blarney

The children experienced an exciting visit from the Trabolgan Centre. They were promoting their Birds of Prey Educational Centre and brought a few surprise guests with them! The children held and were told about a mini spotted owl, a bearded dragon, and a king snake. pic with this The children took a nature trail to the Clogheen Milicon Walk, collected reeds and wove them into Bridget Crosses. Some classes went to the local library where ladies from the active retirement group made crosses with them.

To mark our new spring season a pure bred silky hen visited Rang V for the day. Students made a pop up coup and settled their new student in for a day’s learning! She was named Princess Anna. Rang IV went on an SESE trial in the local square collecting bugs and creepy crawlies. They were fascinating to see all the living creatures and worked so well in groups.

German is on the agenda this term! Transition year students are teaching our students the language through games and fun activities. They are most welcome as we get a glimpse of our past pupils and it is a pleasure to see them so confident and happy. Arabic writing was taught by our Muslim students to promote an interest in other religions and languages. The children wrote their names in Arabic and linked it into an art lesson.

Congratulations to 4th class who entered the Blitz in Ballincollig. The girls managed to get all the way to the final and the boys won it all out. We celebrated with a well deserved ‘homework off’ night!

Romance is in the air as we are building up to a fabulous Valentine Coffee Morning. This will take place on the 13th of February in the junior building. The senior building have made a splash by starting their swimming lessons this term. All is going smoothly and their skills are improving in the water each week.

Hat trick in English and Art – Rang 3 Scoil Chroí Iosa! Milliner to the stars, Philip Treacy really inspired us recently with his weird and fantastic hats. In the first English lesson, we looked and responded to many images of Philip Treacy hats. We voted on our favourites and gave the class the reasons for our choices; they were Lady Gaga’s telephone hat and Princess Beatrice’s ‘toilet seat’ hat! We learned about the life of Philip Treacy and some other famous Irish designers. We listed all the different adjectives that could be used to describe his wacky hats. We then got busy planning our very own marvellous Philip Treacy inspired creations. In our Art lesson, we brought our masterpieces to life. Last but not least, all pupils got the opportunity to showcase their colourful designs in a pop up fashion show that took place in the school. two hatters pics with this Junior infants exploring the arctic in Aistear.
