A new year starts at a busy Berrings National School

On Friday November 14th Berrings National School Green Schools Committee held their Day of Action to kick start their venture towards achieving their third Green Flag. This year we are focusing on conserving water. We have over forty members on our committee! Children from Junior Infants all the way up to Sixth Class are represented on the committee. We had a quiz in the morning and all questions were based on the theme of water. The infant classes took part in an art competition. During the afternoon we carried out lots of different water experiments. We opened the doors of the school hall for all classes to view the experiments and ask the budding scientists as many questions as they could. Finally, we had a slogan competition to see who could come up with the best slogan for the theme of water. The third class pupils came up with the winning entry, ‘Slow The Flow Of H2O’. All children are welcome to join the committee and the interest and enthusiasm among members is extremely motivating for all involved.

Berrings National School celebrated the sporting achievements of past pupils Rena Buckley and Joanne Casey. Rena, an All Ireland Camoige and Football winner and Joanne Casey an All Ireland Camogie medal holder, spoke of their fond memories of being part of the Sciath na Scol when they attended Berrings N.S. Both girls congratulated our current Girls Football Team who reached the Sciath na Scol Final narrowly missing out for the win during extra time. We also welcomed back All Ireland Intermediate Hurling Champions Colm Casey and John O’Callaghan. Pupils from all classes gathered in the Halla and listened intently to their sporting heroes speak about their training regime, matches and All Ireland success.

Christmas was an extremely busy time at Berrings National School. The children from 1st to 6th class had a Carol Service in St. Senan’s Church Berrings. They really brought the Festive Season to life singing and dancing to some of their favourite Christmas songs. The Junior and Senior Infant classes performed in their very own musical called ‘Shine Star Shine’. Rang a Cúig received a very special invention to perform with singer and musician Seán Keane in his ‘Christmas by the Hearth’ concert in the Blarney Golf Resort. The concert proved to be a ‘Magical Christmas Experience’ enjoyed by all in attendance.
